No.5 Air Force Selection Board (AFSB), Kanchrapara

No.5 Air Force Selection Board is the recent addition in the inventory of Air Force Selection Boards. The Chief of the Air Staff Air Chief Marshal Arup Raha inaugurated No 5 AFSB Kanchrapara in North 24 Parganas district of West Bengal. No.5 AFSB has been housed inside Air Force Station Kanchrapara which was set up on September 1, 1942, as a base for P-51 Mustangs, B-25 Mitchells and P-38 Lightnings of the United States Air Force. It fell into disuse after the end of World War II. However, now infrastructural development and all facilities required for selection of candidates have been established at this base.

One thing to note here is that this selection center is now almost exclusively being used to interview in-service candidates from various entries. The selection rate is almost nil as the whole batch is generally washed out. This is also one of the toughest to reach among all SSBs in India.

History

Air Force Station Kanchrapara was set up on September 1, 1942. It was home to several P-51 Mustang, B-25 Mitchell and P-38 Lightning airframes during that time and was quite a busy air force station then. After World War II, however, this airstrip was closed and left abandoned. During all these times, it was used by the local inhabitants and the NCC for physical training purpose.
