AFCAT Examination: Walkway To Indian Air Force

AFCAT stands for Air Force Common Admission Test. This test is conducted by the Indian Air Force for selection of officers in all branches of the IAF (except medical and dental) viz. Flying Branch (Short Service Commission only), Technical Branch (Permanent Commission and Short Service Commission) and Ground Duty Branch (Permanent Commission and Short Service Commission). AFCAT is conducted twice a year (in the month of February and August). The advertisement for the same is published in the months of December and June respectively.

Applications are normally invited from Male and Female from Indian citizens as per Citizenship Act 1955 for the following courses commencing in July every year for grant of Short Service Commission in Flying Branch and Permanent/Short Service Commission in Technical and Ground Duty branches.

Various Branches Eligibility Details

The branches in which applications are invited via AFCAT are Flying Branch (Short Service Commission For men and Women), Technical Branch (Permanent & Short Service Commission For men and Women), Ground Duty Branch (Permanent & Short Service Commission For men & Women).

Eligibility Criteria:

1) Flying Branch

Age: 20 to 24 years (at the time of commencement of course). Upper age limit for candidates holding valid and current Commercial Pilot Licence issued by DGCA (Indian) is relaxable upto 26 years. Candidates below the age of 25 years must be Unmarried.

Educational Qualifications: Graduates (minimum 3 years degree course) in any discipline from a recognized university who have attained minimum 60% marks in aggregate in all papers put together and have passed Maths and Physics at 10+2 level or B.E./B.Tech degree (4 year course) from a recognized university with minimum 60% marks in aggregate in all papers put together.

Candidates who have failed the Pilot Aptitude Battery Test (PABT) in an earlier attempt or a Flight Cadet suspended from flying training at Air Force Academy will not be eligible to apply.

2) Technical Branch

Age: 20 to 26 years (at the time of commencement of course). Candidates below the age of 25 years must be Unmarried.

Educational Qualifications:

  • Aeronautical Engineer (Electronics) AE (L): Candidates applying for AE (L) branch would be eligible if they have undergone a minimum of four year degree qualification from a recognized university or cleared Sections A and B examination of Membership Examination of the Associate Member of Institution of Engineers (AMIE) OR Institute of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineers (IETE) OR Aeronautical Society of India (ASI) with 60% marks. All candidates applying for AE (L) branch should have scored a minimum of 60% marks in aggregate in all papers put together.
  • Aeronautical Engineer (Mechanical) AE (M): Candidates applying for AE (M) branch would be eligible if they have Four year Degree/ Integrated Post Graduation qualification or cleared Sections A and B examination of Associate Membership of Institution of Engineers (India) (AMIE) OR Aeronautical Society of India (ASI) OR Institute of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineers (IETE) with 60% marks for applying in Technical Branch.

3) Ground Duty Branch

Age: 20 to 26 years (at the time of commencement of course). Candidates below the age of 25 years must be Unmarried.

  • Administration & Logistics Branch: Graduate Degree (Minimum three years degree course) with a minimum of 60% aggregate marks in any discipline from a UGC recognized University.
  • Accounts Branch: Graduate Degree in Commerce (B.Com) (Minimum three year degree course) with a minimum of 60% marks in aggregate of all papers put together or Post Graduate Degree in Commerce (M.Com) / CA/ ICWA with a minimum of 50% marks in aggregate of all papers.
  • Education Branch: Post Graduate Degree in any discipline with a minimum of 50% marks in aggregate in all papers.
  • Meteorology Branch: Post Graduate Degree in any Science Stream / Mathematics / Statistics / Geography / Computer Applications / Environmental Science / Applied Physics / Oceanography / Agricultural Meteorology / Ecology & Environment / Geo- physics / Environmental Biology. All candidates must have scored a minimum of 50% marks in aggregate in all papers of Post Graduation put together and should have studied Maths & Physics in Graduation with minimum of 55% marks in both subjects.

How To Apply For AFCAT

To apply, click on “Candidates Login” in the career website of IAF. The login link remains active and visible only during the time period of applying for AFCAT (as mentioned in the examination notification). So be an early bird & fill in the online form as soon as possible.

Candidates are also advised to read the notification which is published during the time as mentioned in first paragraph of this page. The detailed guidelines for filling up online application is given in the website prior to commencement of filling up online applications. While filling online application, it is advisable to keep the relevant documents readily available, as details are to be filled as per matriculation and other educational certificates. Please save your recent colour passport size photograph (size preferably less than 100 kb) in the computer for attaching to your online application form
